Octonauts- Genetic Engineering Cover-up?

So, what precisely is Turnip (and the other vegetable/animal hybrids)? The Nerd King finds my issue with Turnip to be endlessly amusing, to the point that my Facebook wall is now covered with Turnip themed posts. Thanks Honey.

Genetic engineering, that explains it all! Clearly, at some point, the Octonauts were not the friendly little ocean adventurers they claim to be! Nerd King hypothesizes that there was a global food shortage and they were attempting to make a super food (fish/plant/mammal, a complete source of nutrition right?) and it went horribly wrong. I'm betting on a mad scientist that they've locked away in some cave for fear of the past genetic engineering program seeing the light of day.

So what happens to these poor survivors of a mad man's (mad fish's?) scientific rampage? They work in the Octonauts' galley as the cooks, which considering they're part plant could present a troubling dilemma for them. Is this the reason behind the extreme happy-go-lucky attitude? Are they hiding behind a brave face to ignore the realities of their daily lives? Or are they still part of some sad experiment? The world will never know....

Also to ponder- the cooks love to make fish biscuits and kale cakes. If Peso as a medic has pledged to help all and any injured fish they come upon then who exactly are they eating? Perhaps Peso has less than standard medical training...
